Ulyanovsk can be legally called city-museum. Really, here are many museums and all of them are organically interlaced with city culture and architecture. History of many Ulyanovsk museums is rooted in the distant past, when Simbirsk scientists and collectors gathered and presented to their native city large cultural and scientific heritage.
In 2005 two Ulyanovsk regional museums - Museum of local lore and Museum of Arts - celebrated their anniversary - 110 years since foundation day! These museums are the most favorite and popular among the citizens and guests of the city. Here, in the collection of rare exhibits, is presented the whole history of the Simbirsk region - from the foundation till our days.
State historical-memorial preserve "Homeland of V.I. Lenin" in 2004 was only 20, but has already became a pride and the main point of interest of Ulyanovsk. Not only citizens, but also numerous tourists aspire to walk in "museum in the open air", and for a moment to be carried away to Simbirsk of the 19th century.

Ulyanovsk regional museum of fine arts is one of the oldest museums of the Volga region. Museum collection was founded in 1895. The museum contains unique collections of Russian and West-European art, sculpture and graphics of the 16th-20th centuries. Among masterpieces of West-European art, which determine collection originality, are works of outstanding masters of France, Spain, Holland of the 16th-20th centuries.

Museum of folk arts was opened in Ulyanovsk in 1991. It is situated in the old private residence of A.S. Pribylovskaya, which is situated in the historical center of the city, and is a part of Lenin memorial architectural complex. Museum collection includes pieces of traditional national art (peasant art and art trades of the Simbirsk region).

The museum "Simbirsk photography" was opened on the 5th of February 2004 in Engels Street. New spacious building was situated in the memorial part of Ulyanovsk, at the territory of the former mansion of A.I. Sakharov. The place was chosen not by chance, it was determined by history. Here since 1904 was located a photographer's studio, where worked the first masters of photography - Kholevin and Nikanorov.

On the 21st of February 2005 in Ulyanovsk in Federatsii St. was opened a museum-salon of stone "Simbirtsit". Here you can see an exposition on the history of stone forming, their use in stone-working trade, and also purchase souvenirs, pieces of interior, order individual items. Simbirtsit is a unique article stone which was found at the territory of the Ulyanovsk region.

Simbirsk blacksmith's work "Corch" was founded in 1986 as a creative workshop of professional blacksmiths-artists. The main collective of masters consists of 5 people. They are creative people, who work in different directions and techniques, combining historical experience of blacksmith's art and modern methods of metal decoration.

Ulyanovsk regional scientific library has its origin in Simbirsk Karamzin public library, which was opened on the 18th of April 1848 among the first fifty regional public libraries if Russia. The library in Simbirsk was created as a monument to the famous compatriot and the first Russian historiograph N.M. Karamzin, and by request of local nobility was named "Karamzinskaya".

(Branch of Goncharov regional museum of local lore) The literature museum "Yazykovs House" was opened on the 5th of June 1999 by the 200-year anniversary of A.S. Pushkin birthday. It is occupied an old cottage, which belonged to Simbirsk noble family of Yazykovs. The construction of the museum, which was built at the border of 18th - 19th centuries, is the unique architectural monument.

(Branch of Ulyanovsk regional museum of fine arts) A.A. Plastov museum of modern fine arts was opened on the 1st of March 1992. It is arranged in the architectural monument of the beginning of the 20th century - private residence of baron von Stempel, built according to the project of the famous Simbirsk architect A.A. Shode in 1905 - 1906.
