Leninsky District

Name Leninsky District is the name of the old central historical part of the city between the Volga River and the Sviyaga River, between Laishevka village on the north-east of the city and Kirova street on the south. Heart of the district is the place of birth of V.I. Lenin - now immortalized by the building of Lenin memorial. Memorial zone also includes buildings of I.N. Ulyanov pedagogical university, V.I. Lenin gymnasia #1, the hotel "Venets". Center of the city is also decorated with other constructions. These are the Palace of Culture of trade unions (now CNTI), the Palace of Pioneers and students in Minaeva St., the Regional children's library, central store in Goncharova St., building of the Regional drama theater, the hotel "Sovetskaya".

The most beautiful street if boulevard Venets, which is divided into three parts - North, Middle and New Venets. Here are situated buildings and monuments of old times - the regional museum of local lore and museum of fine arts, museum-monument to I.S. Goncharov, agricultural academy (building of the beginning of the 19th century), Karamzin's public library (now Lenin's Palace of books), building of the regional philharmonic society, Y.M. Sverdlov park of culture and leisure, building of the military hospital for war veterans in Kuznetsova St., which borders on the main square of the city - V.I. Lenin square.

Another square of the city - the square of the 30th Victory anniversary in the Second World War, it was arranged in 1975, in connection with opening of the monument in honor of Ulyanovsk soldiers. Here in the 80-s was erected a monument to soldiers-internationalists which had died in Afghanistan.

In Minaeva Street are built modern 9-12-storied houses. Only one construction of the old buildings has remained: the house of the poet-satirist D. Minaev.

The central district enlarged in the 60-s in north direction along former Bolshaya Kazanskaya Street (now Gagarina Street) and Narimanova Avenue. Here appeared residential neighborhoods, the television studio and the television tower, was arranged Park "Pobedy", the plant of microelectronics "Iskra" and the whole living neighborhood towards Isheevka Village.

In Leninsky District is situated V.I. Lenin museum-reserve. Here was reconstructed an old city, as it looked like when Ulyanovs family lived here.

Industrial organizations in Leninsky District are the following: the plant "Kontaktor" (Karl Marks Street), Ulyanovsk Instrument-making plant (now "Utes") in Krymov Street, Ulyanovsk garment factory named after M. Gorky (now OJSC "Elegant"), and others.

Facts in the history of district:

In the 19th century (1898) the city was divided into three parts: noblemen, trade and bourgeois.

The best and the richest part of the city was the nobleman's; it included area between height of Simbirskaya Mountain and Bolshaya Saratovskaya Street, and also the following streets: Moskovskaya, Pokrovskaya and Lisinaya. In this part of the city were situated cathedrals, all regional and city administrative organizations, almost all educational and charitable institutions, a theater, public gardens, boulevards, a club, the best hotels and so on. At that time almost all rich landlords of the region had houses here. This part of the city was not dense, it had broad streets, squares, boulevards, fruit gardens near every house; all this gave to the city an elegant appearance and a special coloring, which distinguished it from other cities of the Volga region.

Zheleznodorozhny district

This is a southern part of the city, which took its name in connection with a railroad network and railway stations. At the beginning of the 20th century the railroad had connected our city with central Moscow and Kazan railways, which gave a stimulus to economical and trade development of Simbirsk. Here are situated the main enterprises of Ulyanovsk branch of Kuibyshev (Samara) railroad and here are situated three of five railway stations: Ulyanovsk-Centralny, Ulyanovsk-I, Ulyanovsk-II, and also railway yard "Yuzhnaya". By 100-year anniversary of V.I. Lenin birthday at the station Ulyanovsk-Centralny was erected the present building of the railway station. At the beginning of the 80-s was completed arrangement of the square in front of the station.

Zheleznodorozhny district is an industrial complex and a large housing estate. In October 1968 here was built a leather-shoe combine in prospekt Gaya, near a knitting factory "Kim" (now OJSC "Rus'"). In the 80-s was founded the factory "Volzhanka" (now one of the enterprises of "Sladko" network), a furniture factory and a dairy factory. Also was built a large-format movie-theater "Sovremennik", a square of T.D. Gaj with a monument to the hero of the Civil war. The important transport significance has Kirov Street, which connect Leninsky and Zheleznodorozhny districts. Here, on the Volga slope, is situated a railway bridge, which leads towards the River port of the city.

From the ancient history of the city:

At the beginning of the 19th century at the territory of Zheleznodorozhny district was a bourgeois outskirts of the city, which was called "Tut'". Now here runs a branch line of the railroad. Present-day streets are: Lokomotivnaya St., Kirova St., and Zheleznodorozhnaya St.

Zasviyazhie

As a district Zasviyazhie exists since the middle 40-s. After war here was waste ground. For 30 years, by the end of the 70-s constructers, nearly erected a new city. Building had already begun in war years, with erections of buildings of the most large city enterprise - V.I. Lenin Ulyanovsk automo`bile plant. It was created on the base of several evacuees to Ulyanovsk workshops of the Machine-building plant at the end of 1941.

In October 1956 Ulyanovsk plant of heavy and unique machines (UPHM) in Moskovskoe Schosse produced the first machine. In July 1961 Repair and engineering works began to produce its output. In this very year in Artema Street was created a Chemicals plant, where were produced rubber items and rubber. In 1962 in Moskovskoe Schosse was erected a House-building combine, which annually put into operation 200 thousand square meters of lodging.

In Zasviyazhie were situated also the air gateway of Ulyanovsk. In anniversary 1970 was put into operation the building of new airport.

In April 1971 in Zasviyazhie was put into operation the first line of Ulyanovsk plant of hydraulic equipment.

The district begins over the bridge in Moskovskoe Schosse Street, which crosses the whole Zasviyazhie from east to west. From the right-hand side is situated the machine-building plant, and from the left - a bus station, which was erected on the eve of 100-years anniversary of Lenin birthday. Architectural buildings of Zasviyazhie are not similar in its outward appearance and planning. The first street is Avtozavodskaya, then waste ground was built up towards the Sviyaga River - it is a big block of brick five-storied buildings, with schools, stores and kindergartens. Soon not far from five-storied buildings were erected nine-storied tower-like houses.

The present-day Zasviyazhie includes wide streets: Tereshkova St., Polbin St., prospekt 50-letiya VLKSM, Zapadny boulevard, Pushkareva St., and others. In the 70-80-s was built new part of the district - Dalnee (Remote) Zasviyazhie with modern panel houses and houses of new series (9-14 stories), with social and culture institutions.

From the ancient history:

At the beginning of the 17th century on the bank of the Sviyaga was founded several settlements, the nearest of which was "Sviyazhskaya", inhabited by those people who came from Sviyazhsk, they were mounted Cossacks. Later it joined the city. Then in this place were situated Bogoyavleny spusk and Bolshaya and Malaya Konnaya Streets. Later, at the beginning of the 18th century, when Pokrovsky Monastery was founded, new settlements arose around it: Soldatskaya, Sirotskaya; now they are Streets of the city with the same names.

Zavolzhie

Before the Volga bridge was built, on the left bank had been formed a settlement, bending for Simbirsk. After the bridge had been built (1913), this district strongly accreted with the city. During the Civil war the Cartridge plant in Zavolzhie (now Volodarsky plant, which was founded in 1916) became one of the largest defense enterprises of the Soviet republic. Especially fast the district was built up after the Great Patriotic War. Here was built a water-protective dam, in connection with erection of Kuibyshev hydroelectric power plant (1958), Verkhniya Terrace was also built in. New house complexes and cultural and social institutions were erected in the 50-60-s: the Palace of the 1st of May, schools, polyclinics, kindergartens. Was started building of "Mars" plant, city hospital #3, Central City Hospital. In the 70-s was started building of Novyi Gorod (New City) in Zavolzhie. Workers and constructors from the whole territory of the USSR and union republics came here to build an Aviation complex. This building promotes housing and culture-social building. In Zavolzhie arose a modern city.

From the ancient history of the city:

On the left bank at the beginning of the 19th century were situated several settlements: Korolevka, Chasovye, Kanava and others. Here were hay meadows and pastures, ploughed fields, were arranged shooting-grounds for reserve battalions.
