In the 19th century (1898) the city was divided into three parts: noblemen, trade and bourgeois.

The best and the richest part of the city was the nobleman's; it included area between height of Simbirskaya Mountain and Bolshaya Saratovskaya Street, and also the following streets: Moskovskaya, Pokrovskaya and Lisinaya. In this part of the city were situated cathedrals, all regional and city administrative organizations, almost all educational and charitable institutions, a theater, public gardens, boulevards, a club, the best hotels and so on. At that time almost all rich landlords of the region had houses here. This part of the city was not dense, it had broad streets, squares, boulevards, fruit gardens near every house; all this gave to the city an elegant appearance and a special coloring, which distinguished it from other cities of the Volga region.

Zheleznodorozhny district

This is a southern part of the city, which took its name in connection with a railroad network and railway stations. At the beginning of the 20th century the railroad had connected our city with central Moscow and Kazan railways, which gave a stimulus to economical and trade development of Simbirsk. Here are situated the main enterprises of Ulyanovsk branch of Kuibyshev (Samara) railroad and here are situated three of five railway stations: Ulyanovsk-Centralny, Ulyanovsk-I, Ulyanovsk-II, and also railway yard "Yuzhnaya". Also was built a large-format movie-theater "Sovremennik", a square of T.D. Gaj with a monument to the hero of the Civil war. The important transport significance has Kirov Street, which connect Leninsky and Zheleznodorozhny districts. Here, on the Volga slope, is situated a railway bridge, which leads towards the River port of the city.

From the right-hand side is situated the machine-building plant, and from the left - a bus station, which was erected on the eve of 100-years anniversary of Lenin birthday. Architectural buildings of Zasviyazhie are not similar in its outward appearance and planning. The first street is Avtozavodskaya, then waste ground was built up towards the Sviyaga River - it is a big block of brick five-storied buildings, with schools, stores and kindergartens. Soon not far from five-storied buildings were erected nine-storied tower-like houses.

From the ancient history:

At the beginning of the 17th century on the bank of the Sviyaga was founded several settlements, the nearest of which was "Sviyazhskaya", inhabited by those people who came from Sviyazhsk, they were mounted Cossacks. Later it joined the city. Then in this place were situated Bogoyavleny spusk and Bolshaya and Malaya Konnaya Streets. Later, at the beginning of the 18th century, when Pokrovsky Monastery was founded, new settlements arose around it: Soldatskaya, Sirotskaya; now they are Streets of the city with the same names.

Before the Volga bridge was built, on the left bank had been formed a settlement, bending for Simbirsk. After the bridge had been built (1913), this district strongly accreted with the city. During the Civil war the Cartridge plant in Zavolzhie (now Volodarsky plant, which was founded in 1916) became one of the largest defense enterprises of the Soviet republic. Especially fast the district was built up after the Great Patriotic War. Here was built a water-protective dam, in connection with erection of Kuibyshev hydroelectric power plant (1958), Verkhniya Terrace was also built in. New house complexes and cultural and social institutions were erected in the 50-60-s: the Palace of the 1st of May, schools, polyclinics, kindergartens. Workers and constructors from the whole territory of the USSR and union republics came here to build an Aviation complex. This building promotes housing and culture-social building. In Zavolzhie arose a modern city.

From the ancient history of the city:

On the left bank at the beginning of the 19th century were situated several settlements: Korolevka, Chasovye, Kanava and others. Here were hay meadows and pastures, ploughed fields, were arranged shooting-grounds for reserve battalions.
